The Ciergerie des Prémontrés, formerly called the Abbey candle factory in Tarascon, founded by the White Fathers in 1858, creates candles, candles and wax objects by hand as in the early Renaissance.
The Ciergerie des Prémontrés practises the techniques of candle making known as "à la louche", a manual and delicate technique which consists in obtaining candles of an equal diameter over the whole height. One by one, the wicks which are attached to a metal hoop are coated with hot wax using a ladle. The cotton wicks are placed in a U-shape on wooden sticks or directly attached to hoops and are then dipped together in the wax. This is known as the dipping technique.
Initially established in the Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet by the White Fathers, they entrusted their know-how and manufacturing secrets to the Chabrier family based in Graveson in 1903. The ciergerie remained there until 2009, when a terrible fire broke out. It is the Souleiado company that bought the ciergerie and set it up in its stronghold on Taracon.
The Ciergerie des Prémontrés is the last traditional French candle factory and the only artisanal factory in Provence to manufacture its candles according to ancestral techniques dating back to the 15th century. The candles and wax objects are composed of carefully selected and measured ingredients (beeswax, vegetable wax, mineral wax, natural pigments, essential oils, woven cotton wicks...) to obtain, thanks to this unique know-how, an exceptional density of wax, thus a longer life span (between 3 to 5 times higher than industrial candles), an intense, deep and lively light To obtain homogeneous shades, colour pigments are thrown in a fine rain in the melted wax and turned over and over again. The same technique is used to perfume the candles (essential oils of flowers). The workshop is run by 4 master candle makers, who perpetuate the excellence of candles that do not drip or give off black smoke.
Today, Ciergerie des Prémontrés manufactures candles in nearly 24 shades ranging from classic white to fluorescent colors. In recent years, the workshop has opened up to more contemporary candle designs.
